  • His research interests include social stratification, demography, economic sociology, and quantitative methodology. Current and recent research projects include the comparative structure of inequality in European and American labor markets, the sources of variation and change in family structure in the U.S. and Europe, social polarization in the U.S. and its link with segregation in social networks along several potential dimensions of social cleavage, the causes of the widening gender gap in higher education in favor of women, and the role of social comparison and cumulative advantage processes in the trend toward rising inequality at the top of the earnings distribution.
